Sometimes, I am a bit extreme in this area and often go overboard. Therefore, the realist in me wants to cut cost a bit, but still want to do the project properly. Two days after I ripped out the old fireplace (1 year old), I found that my wife was pregnant with our first. My plans had been to use ¾” plywood, ½” wonderboard, then travertine tile for the hearth, and ½” wonderboard, travertine for the surround of the fireplace and ½” wonderboard, tiny travertine mosaic for the niche. I am going to be tiling a hearth (16in off floor), surround and a niche. I am completely remodeling my zero clearance fireplace to the extend of everything including framing.
